안녕하세요 안재현님,
My name is N'deye, and I am a student at the University of Maryland, College Park apart of the school's Language House Program. I recently finished reading Pachinko by Min Jin Lee and
found the story of the multi-generational Korean family so fascinating. Through her and Han Kang's works, I've gained various perspectives on the intricacies and depth of South Korean
history. With Pachinko specifically, the idea of shifting spirituality loomed as the generations passed, and Christianity had uprooted some Korean traditions, such as 제사. As someone who studies African diaspora history, there are many parallels in which 'western' religions subduing traditional spirituality are temporally parallel to post-colonial identities and
Western engagement.
I believe this is a significant theme in your animated film, The Shaman Sorceress, which explores the relationship between the Shaman and her son, as well as the shifting spiritual dynamics of the village. As generations go, the line between western interference and chosen belief blurs as we see in characters like Wookyi, who has chosen Christianity despite his Buddhist upbringing. Your film also blends 판소리 to beautifully depict the character's emotions and scenery. I think it's important that Korean musicality is not only highlighted through pop music alone but through traditional routes as well.
Animated films hold so much power to tell several stories and shape our perspectives, and I would love to center this film for my club event. I am the president and founder of JARA UMD's 1st Korean Language & Culture Exchange club. We work under the Language House program, which comprises students learning secondary languages and international students from all
over the world, and a number of them are from South Korea. I would love, at your best convenience, to discuss potentially having a screening of The Shaman Sorceress and you, Director 안재현님, as a guest speaker for this spring semester.
